Back in my groove….finally

I feel like these last few months I’ve been going through the motions…with working out. I get up I run. I get up and go to yoga. I still feel great after but it’s like I haven’t been really been 100% in it.

I think this happens to everyone now and then. I decided to stop going to the gym I’d been a member of for almost two years. It was an all girl gym which has it’s benefits but I felt like the classes never changed. On the off chance they did they seemed to just keep adding Zumba. I get that Zumba is a big thing around here, it’s just not my thing.  Then I got a puppy. I love her to pieces, but that first couple months were tough. I spent a lot of time sitting at home drinking wine and eating cheese and watching her like a hawk.  I still ran because it was something quick and easy. I didn’t have to drive anywhere and most days I was able to get a run in while I was at work which worked out perfectly.

My funk caused me to have less desire to run or workout. I did what I needed to do to ensure that I only gained 7 pounds instead of 20 pounds.  I think the cold weather just perpetuated the cycle. It was cold and I am solely an outdoors runner. I went and ran and put on a brave face and smiled. I’ll be honest though, most days sucked. A lot.

I felt like I couldn’t quite figure out how to get of my rut. I tried new workouts and nothing called to me. I tried kettlebell stuff, medicine ball stuff, HIIT and many more and I found myself annoyed with instructors and giving up after a couple tries. Running and yoga were the only constant.

My brother let me borrow Insanity Asylum and I was hooked. It was a challenge, almost too much. It called to my stubborn streak and I loved it. My knee, however, did not. Within a week of jumping around my living room I developed some tendinitis in my knee. This frustrated me more that words can say. It made almost everything painful, including yoga and running. I felt like the universe was hinting at something. I boxed up the ladder and DVDs to return to my brother. I took a few days off from running, and then a few more.

In the meantime I ordered 21 Day Fix. I think that was the best decision I’ve made in awhile. I started the program last Monday. I’ve lost 5.3 pounds and feel like I’ve found my rhythm at last. My knee has begun feeling better. It still hurts, but ibuprofen does the trick twice a day. The workouts are great. I love waking up and doing them all. They are challenging which I need, but don’t have crazy plyo moves so my knee is loving it.

Yesterday I began week two and since it was a rest day from running, I actually did the Total Body Cardio Fix twice! Once in the morning and again that afternoon. Running rest days are always a challenge for me. I feel like I have so much energy just pinging around. I have to do something with it.

Gotta represent the US Coast Guard!!

Today I did Upper Body Fix and had a run.  I was supposed to go to yoga, that pesky little thing called my job got in the way. So since it’s still cold outside I had to wait till midday to run. It was such a good run. I needed that. My plan was to run 4 miles and then it felt so good I just decided to run for 40 minutes.

I ran down a few roads avoiding construction and was rewarded with some of Philadelphia’s murals.

Not sure what is going on in this one

I ran down Market St and ended up at City Hall. I don’t think ever ran there from Market St at least not in that direction. So of course I had to stop for pics.

I finished the run back at the base and ran a total of 4.56 miles in 40:40. I feel good about the pace and am finally looking forward to running again. I am so happy to finally be out of my funk!!

I am branching out in my breakfasts on the 21 Day Fix….I love the oatmeal. I know I’ll get tired of it if I keep eating it. Tonight I made the most amazing thing!

Sweet Potato Hash

  • 1 small onion
  • 1 medium sweet potato (I used 3 small ones)
  • 1 apple
  • 8 ounces cubed ham
  • 1/2 tsp onion and garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp allspice and cayenne

Cook the onions, then add peeled and cubed sweet potatoes, then the apple ham and spices. I cooked these for around 15 minutes in coconut oil and in a separate pan scrambled 4 eggs. I combined them all and it makes about 4 servings! I can’t wait to try it tomorrow morning.  I’m thinking it works out to 1 red 1 yellow and 1 purple and 1 tsp coconut oil.

Until next time!!

  1. I know how you feel! I hit the same rut. We had about 2 weeks of super good weather and it brought me back. But now it’s cold again AND I’m semi-tapering so I’m grumpy again. Haha
